Well the day has finally come. Here I sit in the airport lounge waiting to depart on this adventure.
Over the past week, I packed my saddle bags with clothing, dry bags with camping gear, and the passenger seat bag with a host of odds and ends. I would also have a small bag with my helmet, gloves and miscellaneous stuff. But I didn't want to carry multiple small bags through the airport, not to mention check them all.
So, I figured I would pack all the stuff into a couple "legal" size cardboard boxes and have them plastic stretch wrapped before checking all the stuff in for additional strength. The idea being of course, is I can throw all that temporary luggage stuff out once I get into Calgary. Clever plan right?
Surprise number one: the airport no longer offers plastic shrink-wrap services for boxes etc. So I am now onto plan B. Hope like hell the "as-is" boxes make it through to Calgary in tact.
Many of you know I have travelled a lot in my working life, and I have often shaken my head when I see cardboard boxes coming out on the luggage carousel. "Who does that? Really??" Sometimes I've seen broken boxes come down the belt followed by a bunch of loose clothing.
Let's all hope we're not watching some fool's motorcycle helmet and camping gear bouncing down the belt today.
